Hackers mess up with Facebook accounts

The world's largest social networking site, Facebook, which has more than 800 million users worldwide, has once again come under the scanner for security issues with thousands of user accounts in Bangalore getting hacked.

Facebook said in a statement that this happened because of some Java script error in some browsers and that the hackers would have used that error to intrude into Facebook. The other speculation, according to experts, is that some apps might have gone rogue. "Once permissions are given to the app, it continues to use it unless specified otherwise.

It is possible that hack ers could have used an app you gave permissions to," said Adhvith Dhuddu, founder, Alive Now, a Bangalore-based social media management firm. According to tabloid MidDay, close to two lakh user accounts were hacked with links to a pornographic picture of users.

Security and privacy were among the major concerns raised at the Facebook developer conference in September this year in California. The social networking giant unveiled many changes in the user account to ensure greater security and privacy. "Security and privacy are among the major concerns.

With incidences like these, the credibility of Facebook will go down. There are not just users on Facebook. There are big brands present as well. And, they get nervous when they see such incidences," said Dhuddu. "Pornographic images and videos show up on my Facebook wall every now and then.

In fact, this has been happening every since I moved to Bangalore a year back. Recently I received a video titled 'I Never Expected You to do This'. I knew it was a virus; once I click on it, it will be posted on all my friends' walls," said Natasha, a 21-year-old advertising student from Bangalore. In October, New York Daily News had reported that Facebook accounts are hacked 600,000 times daily during users' log-in. According to the report, the lapse in security was first reported by UK-based computer security firm Sophos.
